LOUISVILLE, MISSISSIPPI NATIVE CARL JACKSON
COMES “HOME FOR CHRISTMAS”
Heads
up benefit for his hometown’s arts center.
On Saturday, December 10th, in his hometown of Louisville, Mississippi,
country music and bluegrass songwriter, performer and double Grammy
winner Carl Jackson will head “home” for Christmas. While he’s
there, he will head up the 9th Annual Carl Jackson
“Home for Christmas” concert, which is an annual benefit concert
to renovate the old movie theater in the town where Carl grew
up.
Joining Carl for a night of bluegrass, country, and traditional Christmas
music will be fellow songwriters and award winning performers
Larry Cordle and Jerry Salley along with Nashville
singer Valerie Storey. Mississippi
bass player and Carl’s friend, Johnny Rawls, will also join him
as well as The Larry Wallace Band from Starkville,
Mississippi.
A master of the banjo (and most other stringed instruments), Cark Jackson
became a professional musician in his early teens. At age thirteen,
Carl became of member of Jim
and Jesse McReynolds's "Virginia Boys" and played
with them for five years. When Jackson
was only 14 years old, he made his first appearance at the Grand
Ole Opry as a member of the “Bluegrass Greats.” He was then
invited to be a member of Glenn Campbell's band, where he
performed for 12 years including Campbell's
television show. On the Campbell
show, Carl was featured as “the greatest banjo player in
the world”.
Carl Jackson has also made his mark on country and bluegrass music as an
extremely successful song writer and session musician. Carl has
played with and had cuts by Garth
Brooks, Pam
Tillis, Rhonda Vincent, Patty Loveless, Diamond Rio, Emmylou Harris,
Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly
Parton, and many others. "Little Mountain Church House,"
a co-write with Jim Rushing, was the International Bluegrass Music
Association Song of the Year award in 1990. In 1991, Spring Training,
his album with John Starling, earned him a Grammy for Best Bluegrass
Recording.
A world-class guitarist,
Carl released two albums in 2002 with Larry Cordle and Jerry Salley
entitled, “Against the Grain,” and “Lonesome Café.” An editorial review of “Against
the Grain,” published by Amazon.com and written by Marc Greilsamer,
stated, “. . . the trio’s terrific harmonies are what command
your attention. There’s considerable stylistic diversity
here, with hardcore honky-tonk, catchy country-pop, lite-country
ballads, hot-country rockers, and bluegrass all finding a place
in the mix. In most spots, it’s difficult to imaging any established
Nashville
star doing a better job than these three do themselves.”
The article went on to list some famous artists who have recorded songs
written by Jackson, Cordle, and Salley, including Garth Brooks,
Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, Alison Krauss, Diamond Rio, Gene
Watson, Pam Tillis, The Osbourne Brothers, Johnny Paycheck, Reba
McEntire, Vince Gill, Mel Tillis, George Jones, The Nitty Gritty
Dirt Band, John Anderson, Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra, Dolly
Parton, John Michael Montgomery, and Travis Tritt.
In 2004, Carl received two Grammy’s for the
album he produced and performed on, entitled, “Livin’, Lovin’,
Losin’ – The Songs of the Louvin Brothers.” The group that Carl
assembled to sing on this album is, in itself, astounding: Carl
Jackson, Joe Nichols, Rhonda Vincent, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell,
James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Terri Clark, Merle Haggard,
Ronnie Dunn, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Glen Campbell, Leslie Satcher,
Kathy Louvin, Pamela Brown Hayes, Linda Ronstadt, Patty Loveless,
Jon Randall, Harley Allan, Dierks Bentley, Larry Cordle, Jerry
Salley, Dolly Parton, Sonya Isaacs, Marty Stuart, Del McCoury,
Pam Tillis, Johnny Cash, and the Jordanaires. Many artists on
the album have co-written with Carl, performed with him and/or
recorded his songs over the years.
The 9th Annual Red Hills Arts Foundation "Home
for Christmas" concert will be held at the Community Arts Center
on Saturday, December 10th, with two concerts: 5pm and 8pm.
The concert is produced completely by a volunteer production team.
Allen Delk, LuxaPalila Records of Columbus, Mississippi, serves
each year as the concert's audio engineer. To reserve and purchase
tickets, call the Louisville, Mississippi
Chamber of Commerce at 662-773-3921.

Garrison Starr, home to
Mississippi Native soil.
Story and photo's by, Allen Delk,
member, CMA,IBMA,NSAI,BMI - Nashville, Tn.
She Rocks! Awesome!, These were just a few comments that
you could hear in the mist from the students and locals
April 3rd at the MUWsic fest on campus in Columbus, Miss.
Garrison Starr is a native to Mississippi, born in
Hernando in 1977. Starr spent most of her growing
years in Memphis and began playing guitar and singing
around ten years old.
After high school She started playing local music
clubs in Memphis and was hired by the well
known Ardent Records label as she says, "a gofer".
Learning the ropes around the studio at Ardent,
Garrison completed a demo, which was sent to
the A & R department of Geffen Records in
Los Angeles, resulting in the release of the record
"Eighteen Over Me" by Geffen in 1997.
Starr continues to climb the music industry latter
as a Singer Songwriter Woman of Rock , with
Her new label, Vanguard Records and the
February 2004 release of "Airstreams & Satellites".
As a Road Musician by age 20 , Starr has toured with
many icons in music, such as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earl,
Melissa Etheridge, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockbern
And others . Star's sure do seem to fall on Mississippi !

Allison Moorer - The Duel
Work play Theatre, Birmingham ,Alabama
photo & story Allen Delk / CMA,IBMA,NSAI/ Nashville,Tn.
Allison Moorer has joined the Sugar Hill Records
Label. Her new record, The Duel is set to be released
April 13th . This is one that the musical undergrounds
have been waiting for. With her voice and guitar Allison
has the power to spin the moon into max rotation at will.
The Duel is sure to be a firecracker on radio airplay.
It was recorded in just twelve days with co- songwriter/
producer and husband Doyle "Butch" Primm and
the well known Hattiesburg, Mississippi native
producer R.S. Field.
Allison's fog is still in the air from the 1999 live debut,
Singing "A Softer Place to Fall" from the Horse Whisperer
Soundtrack , in the Academy Awards Telecast.
The Duel is not the typical polished up cover up your
attuned to hearing from the major labels she's been on
for five years. This one is real and gritty, down to earth.
Allison's front porch screen door is wide open.
It ain`t country pop rock ! It's Allison Moorer,
Just like the Alabama woman she is. Yes I could have
said a lot Moorer , just go buy it you`ll like it :.

On March 16 th, at 8:00 pm Tuesday,
New comer Mindy Smith took the stage at
Oxfords new Ford Center with a packed
Room, 2000 some odd fans of the world
known Nickel Creek band were treated
With an opening act that's soon not to be
Forgotten.
Ms. Smith's new record, "One Moment More"
Is sure to be a winner in this years line up of
New breaking Artist Releases.
-Time out New York- released a quote
earlier this year, that Mindy Smith's
One Moment More is "
the next big thing."
Music industry icons are saying " Norah Jones
with a guitar."
Santa Monica `s Vanguard / Welk Music Group
Is sure to have selected a winner this time.
The songs on the new album are from the
heart and roots to the core, with lyric flow
that only legendary songwriters craft.
Holding out for five years or so, to find
A label on Nashville's Music Row that
Would give Mindy the freedom to do it her
way was not easy. With the help of Dolly
Parton on her song Jolene, featured in the
Record and a favorite on CMT,
I think, " Mindy just kicked a field goal
At Ole Miss."

MUW Art students design CD cover for local band
By Brittian Anderson
MUW News Editor
bfa@muw.edu
Graphic design instructor Robert Gibsons advanced illustration
class is currently designing a CD cover for a local band called
Side Project.
Luxapalila Record CEO and Mississippi native, Allen Delk got the
idea of asking an art class from the university to create the
CD cover. Delk called Gibson and told Gibson he wanted his students
to be involved.
"I am going to implement it into a class project," said
Gibson after receiving the phone call from Delk. "It is to
promote the band and to promote our department." Gibson also
said that this project helps his students with "getting real
world experience."
Side Project consists of lead vocalist Jeremy Doss, lead and rhythm
guitarist Robert McPherson, drummer Matt Maloney and bassist Danny
Murphy. Their CD will be released this spring. Side Project has
performed at the Market Street Festival and 2003s Roast
and Boast.
Currently, Luxapalila Records has 12 artists on its label and
Delk prefers his musicians to write their own songs because he
said, "You got to have something to say."
Delks memberships include the Country Music Association
and the International Bluegrass Music Association. He is also
a field representative for Sugar Hill records who has artists
like Nickel Creek.
Side Project will be playing at Zacharys at 9 p.m. on Feb.
21 and Feb. 27 and admission is free. "We are hoping the
students will come out and support it," Delk said.
